Great Congress! The attendees certainly got their exercise as the Philadelphia Convention Center is large and in two buildings. AORN was the first large convention in their newly expanded space; we occupied the entire thing. We were greeted by Mayor Nutter who expressed his appreciation for our attendance and asked that we not wait fifty three years to return. That is how long it has been since we have been in Philadelphia. We outgrew their convention center until the recent expansion. Within four blocks of the Convention Center are multiple good restaurants. Mayor Nutter informed us “Philadelphia has been voted the safest city in American.” Never once did I feel threatened nor unsafe. When I asked the front desk personnel if it was safe for me to walk to the Marriot alone the answer was, “Absolutely!” That remark from a hotel staff that had been very protective of us said volumes to me.
Our President, Melissa Backscheider was quoted in the Sunday Congress News: “Nurses are nurses all over the world.” Melissa, a first time attendee at Pre-Congress, attended the sessions on global nursing issues.
Former American Idol contestant Justin Guarini sang a stirring rendition of the National Anthem with a color guard of members of the Philadelphia-Continental Chapter in revolutionary dress. More than one someone needs to remind Justin to remove his hat as a sign of respect for our flag and country during the presentation on the National Anthem.
Larry Asplin from CCI reported there is an all time high of 33,500 CNORs and 152 new CRNFA’s. CCI has donated $400,000 to the AORN Foundation.
WOW! Eric Wahl, motivational speaker and painter, was phenomenal! His paintings were on a black background He donated the three to the AORN Foundation Silent Auction. Ruth Schumaker, Previous President, was determined to buy his painting of Lady Liberty; an RN outbid her with $4,000. His paintings of John Lennon and Eistein raised $1,650 and $1,550 respectively for the total of $7,200. He painted all of them while talking and painted Einstein upside down. That is a lot of scholarships and educational grants. I wanted Lady Liberty, but that was too rich for me.
The week got better with educational sessions and the posters. The Exhibitors held a reception on Monday evening. I was able to gather all of the Study Guides for an additional 30 contact hours. There were additional educational sessions on the floor of the Exhibit Halls. Numerous exhibitors also joined “Give and Learn,” a project of the Foundation. They donated $1 for every nurse who dropped by their booths. Doing all of the posters earned another 19 contact hours.
The Forum and House of Delegates sessions were once again informative and interesting to learn the business of our organization. All of the proposed by-laws changes were approved following lively discussion.
Some very tight races resulted in the following election results with a total of 2587 electronic votes:
*Indicates newly elected
President Anne Marie Herlehy
*President Elect Deb Spratt
*Treasurer Anne Fairchild
Vice President Rosie Schroeder
Secretary Jane Kusler-Jenson
Board of Directors:
Renae Battie’
Denise Jackson
*Darin Prescot

Closing General Session Speaker, Mike Schlappi was very inspirational. Confined to a wheelchair following being accidently shot by a friend as a teenager, his motto is “If you can’t stand up, stand out.” “Takers eat well. Givers sleep well.” was something else he told us. He is a marvelous speaker!
Congress was a very good week: exhausting and exhilarating as always.
Thank you, from all the delegates, for the honor and privilege of representing Cincinnati Tristate chapter members. Our voices do make a difference. I would like to once again see our contingency filled with enthusiastic people.
